About Her Legacy Consulting

We exist so that a woman’s business can outlive her hardest season

Her Legacy Consulting is a business consultancy for women entrepreneurs, women-owned SMEs and purpose-driven organisations across the Western Cape and Northern Cape. We work in the practical detail of a business, strategy, operations, administration, finance, compliance and leadership, until the company can stand on structure rather than on the owner’s endurance.

Most owners we meet are not short of effort or ideas. They are short of systems, accurate numbers and someone experienced to think it through with them. That is the gap we were built to close, and we close it in plain language, without judgement about where your records or your confidence currently sit.

Our commitment

Every engagement ends with you holding the systems, the templates and the understanding, not a dependency on us.

Our story

Built in response to what women in business kept asking for

Her Legacy Consulting began with a pattern that repeated itself too often to ignore. Capable women were running real businesses, catering, cleaning contracts, logistics, retail, professional services, crafts and agriculture - and they were working extremely hard. Yet the same problems kept surfacing: pricing that had never been calculated properly, invoices chased by memory, compliance handled at the last moment and no clear view of whether the month had actually made money.

What they were missing was not motivation. It was access. Experienced business consultants tend to cluster around corporate clients, charge in a way that excludes small enterprises and speak a language of frameworks that leaves an owner no clearer than before. Meanwhile the people who most needed structured advice were the ones least likely to receive it: women in townships, small towns and rural districts who had built something from nothing and had nobody senior to think it through with.

So the firm was established to do the unglamorous, decisive work. Sit with the real numbers. Rebuild the pricing. Write the standard operating procedures. Get the registrations, the tax and the records in order. Design the week so the owner is not the bottleneck. Then stay long enough to see whether the change actually held, because advice that is never implemented is simply an expensive opinion.

The name was deliberate. When a woman’s business becomes stable, the effect spreads outward, a child finishes school, a household stops living month to month, two or three people are employed and their families feel it too. A business built on structure can be handed on, sold, or grown by the next generation. That is what we mean by legacy, and it is the standard we hold our own work against.

Today the practice serves women entrepreneurs, women-owned SMEs, family businesses, startups and purpose-driven organisations across the Western Cape and Northern Cape, in person where travel makes sense and online where it does not. The commitment has not changed: practical business transformation, delivered respectfully, in language you can act on this week.

In one paragraph

Her Legacy Consulting is a South African business consultancy founded to give women entrepreneurs the strategic, operational and financial support usually reserved for larger companies. It serves clients across the Western Cape and Northern Cape through in-person and online engagements, focusing on structure, systems and measurable progress rather than motivation alone.

Our purpose

What we are aiming at, and what governs how we get there

A consultancy without a defined purpose drifts towards whatever pays. Ours is written down because it decides which work we take, how we advise and what we refuse to do.

These four statements are not decoration. They are the test we apply when a client asks us to cut a corner, when a strategy looks profitable but unwise, and when the honest answer is harder to deliver than the comfortable one.

Vision

A Western Cape and Northern Cape where women-owned businesses are structured, profitable and durable enough to employ others, support families and stay standing long after their founders have stepped back.

Mission

To give women entrepreneurs and purpose-driven organisations practical consulting they can actually use: clear strategy, sound financial and administrative systems, compliant operations and leadership that holds under pressure.

Purpose

To close the advisory gap. Experienced business support has always been concentrated in city centres and priced for corporates. We take that same rigour to Mitchells Plain, Grabouw, Springbok and Wupperthal, and we speak in language that respects the owner.

Core beliefs

Stewardship, wisdom, integrity, hope and servant leadership. We treat a client's money, staff and reputation as things held in trust, we say what the numbers really show, and we build up rather than take over. These convictions shape how we work; they are never a condition of working with us.

What we believe about business

Seven convictions we bring to every engagement

You are entitled to know how your consultant thinks before you appoint them. This is ours, stated plainly.

Business should create opportunity

A profitable business is not only an income for one household. It is a salary for someone else, a supplier paid on time and a young woman who now sees a path she can follow.

Leadership begins with service

Authority in a small business is earned by removing obstacles for your team, not by controlling them. Owners who serve their people well keep their people.

Strong systems build resilient businesses

A documented process protects your standards on the days you are ill, travelling or simply exhausted. Systems are what make quality repeatable.

Financial discipline creates freedom

Knowing your true costs, your margins and your tax position is not restrictive. It is what allows you to quote with confidence, hire without fear and sleep at night.

Integrity builds lasting relationships

Clients, banks, SARS and staff all respond to consistency. Honest records and kept promises compound into a reputation that wins work you never tendered for.

Sustainable growth beats rapid growth

Turnover that outruns your systems creates late deliveries, unpaid tax and burnt-out staff. We would rather build capacity first and then let volume follow.

Every business can become a legacy

Legacy is not reserved for large companies. It is any enterprise structured well enough to be handed on, sold or scaled without collapsing.

What we are built on

Six commitments that shape every client relationship

We are a consulting firm with convictions. These values decide how we advise, how we price our time and how we treat the businesses trusted to us.

Purpose

We start every engagement by understanding why your business exists. Purpose is not a poster on the wall, it is the filter we use when deciding what to build, what to fix and what to stop doing.

Integrity

We tell you what the numbers actually say. If a plan will not work, you will hear it from us early, in plain language, while there is still time to change course.

Stewardship

Your revenue, your team and your time are resources held in trust. We build systems that protect them, so growth does not quietly cost you your health or your margins.

Excellence

A small business can operate with the discipline of a large one. Documented processes, accurate records and consistent service are what turn a good idea into a durable company.

Hope

Many owners arrive discouraged. We work in a way that restores confidence: one clear decision at a time, with visible progress you can measure within the first quarter.

Servant Leadership

We are not here to take the wheel. We equip you and your team to lead well, then hand over the systems, templates and knowledge so the business no longer needs us to function.

Candice Ohlson, Founder and Lead Business Consultant at Her Legacy Consulting

Meet our founder

Candice Ohlson, Founder & Lead Business Consultant

Candice built her career inside the working parts of small and medium businesses rather than above them. Operations, finance, tax, compliance and administration were not subjects she studied at a distance; they were the deadlines she carried, the reconciliations she completed and the systems she had to build when a company outgrew the way it had always done things.

That background shapes how she consults. She reads a set of figures quickly, recognises a pricing problem disguised as a marketing problem, and knows the difference between a business that is genuinely unprofitable and one that is simply undercharging. She is equally comfortable rewriting a quoting template as she is facilitating a strategy session with a leadership team.

Her role in an engagement is deliberately not the hero’s. The owner is the one who has taken the risk, carries the relationships and will still be there in five years. Candice acts as the experienced guide who brings the plan, the structure and the honest second opinion, then hands the controls back.

She leads the practice from the Western Cape and works throughout the Northern Cape, with a particular commitment to towns where experienced business support has always been hard to reach. The firm is built around the work rather than around her name, because a legacy, by definition, must outlast the person who started it.

Where her experience helps clients most

Operations
Workflow design, scheduling, stock control and service delivery in businesses where the owner is still part of daily production.
Finance
Costing, pricing, cash-flow planning and management reporting that a non-financial owner can read and act on.
Tax & compliance
Registrations, SARS obligations, statutory filings and the record-keeping that keeps a business audit-ready.
Administration
Quoting, invoicing, filing and document control, the routines that decide whether money is collected or quietly lost.
Business systems
Standard operating procedures, templates, checklists and hand-over documents that make quality repeatable.
SME development
Practical enterprise development with startups, family businesses and small teams in township, small-town and rural economies.

Our consulting philosophy

How we work with a business, every single time

Our approach is repeatable on purpose. Whether the client is a two-person startup in Grabouw or an established twenty-person operation in Cape Town, the discipline is the same, only the depth changes.

Listening comes before advising

We do not arrive with a template. The first sessions are spent understanding what you sell, how the work actually flows, who does what and where the money leaks.

Understand the business as it is

Advice must fit your season, your cash position and your capacity. A recommendation that assumes staff or funds you do not have is not a recommendation.

Practical solutions over theory

Every engagement produces things you can use, a costing model, a written procedure, a filing structure, a weekly rhythm. Never only a report.

Sustainable systems, not heroics

If a fix depends on the owner remembering it, it will fail. We design it so the business, not the person, carries the standard.

Long-term partnership

We stay through implementation, review what held and adjust what did not. Most clients keep a light monthly rhythm long after the intensive work is done.

Measurable progress

Each phase has an agreed outcome you can see: a margin figure, a turnaround time, a compliance status, a documented process. Progress is checked, not assumed.

What this rules out matters as much as what it includes. We do not sell generic templates, we do not present strategies the business cannot fund, and we do not disappear at the point where a plan becomes hard work. Consulting is only worth its fee when the business is measurably different afterwards.

Our framework

The five stages of a Her Legacy engagement

Listen, Understand, Strategise, Implement, Strengthen. Each stage has a defined outcome, so you always know what has been completed and what comes next.

  1. Listen

A structured conversation about the business, the pressure points and what you want your life to look like on the other side of the work. Nothing is diagnosed before it is heard.

Expected outcome: A shared, honest picture of where the business stands today.

  2. Understand

We examine the operating detail: pricing, costs, workflow, records, compliance status, team roles and client patterns. Assumptions are tested against actual numbers.

Expected outcome: A written diagnosis naming the real constraints in priority order.

  3. Strategise

Together we choose the few changes that will move the business most, sequence them realistically and agree what success looks like for each one.

Expected outcome: A practical plan with owners, dates and defined outcomes.

  4. Implement

We work alongside you to build what the plan requires, costing models, procedures, admin routines, compliance catch-ups, team structures, and train the people who will run them.

Expected outcome: Working systems in daily use, not documents in a folder.

  5. Strengthen

We review what held, correct what did not and hand over templates and knowledge so the business runs the standard without us. Ongoing support continues only where it adds value.

Expected outcome: A business that keeps its structure once the engagement ends.

Why women choose Her Legacy Consulting

Credibility built on substance, not slogans

We will not claim to be the biggest or the best. What we can describe precisely is how this partnership differs from the alternatives most owners have already tried.

Approachable expertise

Senior-level thinking delivered without jargon or condescension. You can ask the basic question and get a straight answer.

Practical business guidance

Recommendations are sized to your cash, your team and your week. If you cannot start it within a fortnight, we have not finished the job.

Operational excellence

We are comfortable in stock, scheduling, quoting and hand-offs, the places where most small-business margin quietly disappears.

Personalised support

You work directly with a senior consultant for the length of the engagement. Nothing is passed to a junior you have never met.

We know the realities

Late-paying clients, seasonal income, load-shedding, family responsibilities and staff who are also neighbours. Plans are built around those facts.

Commitment to the long term

Our measure of success is whether the change is still in place a year later, which is why implementation and review are part of the work, not extras.

Communities we are passionate about

Rooted in the Western Cape and Northern Cape

These are places whose business conditions we have taken the time to understand. They are not an exclusive list, businesses elsewhere in South Africa are supported online, but they are where our attention and travel are deliberately directed.

  • Cape Town

Service firms, professional practices and founders trading with corporate and government clients who need tighter contracting and reporting.

  • Mitchells Plain

Family-run retail, food and trade businesses formalising registration, pricing and staff structure for the first time.

  • Malmesbury

Swartland agricultural suppliers, logistics operators and service providers managing seasonal cash flow.

  • Wupperthal

Cederberg craft, rooibos and heritage enterprises building market access and consistent product costing.

  • Grabouw

Seasonal enterprises balancing fluctuating income, labour cycles and packhouse demand.

  • Paarl

Hospitality businesses, wine-route suppliers and boutique manufacturers refining margins and service standards.

  • George

Garden Route tourism, construction and professional services scaling beyond the founder.

  • Springbok

Namaqualand traders and contractors working far from suppliers, banks and head offices.

Distance from suppliers, seasonal income, client payment culture and access to finance differ from one town to the next. Advice that ignores those differences is advice you cannot use, which is why our recommendations always start from the conditions you actually trade in.

An invitation to partner

Growth is a partnership built on trust, clarity and consistent action

You do not need to have your records in order, your strategy written or your confidence fully restored before you speak to us. You need one honest conversation about where the business actually is and what the next right step would be.

If that is the kind of partnership you have been looking for, we would be glad to begin it with you. Every request is reviewed personally by a consultant, and your information is handled in line with POPIA.
